Jacob Klatzkin – In Praise of Wisdom – First American Edition – Presentation Copy to Jules Moch – Original Press Kit with Thomas Mann
A rare copy of the first American edition of In Praise of Wisdom by philosopher Jacob Klatzkin, published by L. B. Fischer Publishing Corporation, New York, accompanied by its complete original publisher's press kit, an exceptional survival rarely found together with the book.
This copy bears a presentation inscription by Boris Klatzkin, the author's son:
"To Jules Moch, in memory of his short stay with us. Spring 1946. Boris Klatzkin."
The book comes from the library of Jules Moch (1893–1985), one of France's leading post-war statesmen, who served several times as a government minister.
The original press material includes:
- a reproduction of the famous endorsement letter by Thomas Mann, Nobel Prize in Literature, who compares Klatzkin's work to Nietzsche's Daybreak and The Gay Science, stating that Klatzkin's prose is, at times, equal to Nietzsche's;
- a letter by Hendrik Willem van Loon, praising Klatzkin and comparing his philosophical thought to that of Spinoza;
- several pages of contemporary reviews from major American publications, including the New York Herald Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, Journal of Philosophy, and Library Journal, placing Klatzkin alongside Montaigne, Pascal, Bacon, Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, Emerson, and Nietzsche.
Jacob Klatzkin was one of the leading Jewish philosophers of the twentieth century. In Praise of Wisdom is a remarkable collection of philosophical aphorisms and reflections on knowledge, human nature, freedom, and the meaning of life.
An outstanding association copy with distinguished provenance, preserved together with its scarce original promotional material and contemporary endorsements by two major intellectual figures of the twentieth century. A highly desirable item for collectors of philosophy, literature, Judaica, and association copies.
