Elephants are often referred to as pachyderms and this leads to the fallacy that nothing and nobody can do anything to them. But we're wrong. Elephants have always been hunted and killed for their ivory. What is often ignored, however, is that the killed elephants often leave young animals behind which, traumatized and frightened, have to live on as orphans. The photographer Joachim Schmeisser tells their story. Through his own elephant sponsorship, he came into contact with the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the world's largest and most successful rescue and reintroduction center for orphaned elephants, which is based in Nairobi.
